The BOQS Mudguard System

Mountain biking is a unique clash between expensive, high-performance equipment and Nature's most aggressive terrain and conditions.

One of the most vulnerable, exposed areas of a bike are the fork stanchions, so many riders choose to equip one of these two types of mudguards to protect the smooth surfaces from damage:

  1. Thin polypropylene fenders that are bent into shape and attached to the fork arch using zip or velcro ties.

  2. Injection molded polypropylene mudguards that mount onto screw bosses found on many modern suspension forks.

Unfortunately, those thin, flat mudguards require new zip ties and something to cut them with each time they are replaced or removed, and they’re also susceptible to being ripped or torn from rocks trapped in the front wheel. Those same zip ties also lead to damage on the fork legs where they rub.

Injection-molded mudguards that attach to the fork arch with hardware do offer a more robust construction and fitment, but in case of damage, the entire mudguard must be replaced - even though typically only one part of the mudguard may have failed.

The BOQS Mudguard:

Bolt On, Quick Swap.

The BOQS mudguard offers the best of both kinds of mudguards without any of their drawbacks, as well as benefits unique only to it.

BOQS is a two-part system where a separate, flexible TPU fender snap-fits onto a stiffer, bolt-on mount. This mount stays installed onto the specific mounting bosses found on most modern suspension fork arches.

The BOQS System consists of two components with many advantages:

  1. Tool-less and fast removal of the fender from the fork, allowing for easy cleaning, service to the fork or wheel, or replacement if damaged.

  2. Specific materials for each component that optimize their performance and characteristics: the fender is strong yet flexible, easy to clean, and even customizable, while the mount is stiffer, more compact, and ultimately stronger and more protected from damage.

The BOQS fender is additively manufactured by sandwiching a .48mm inner structure of PETG between single .24mm outer layers of thermoplastic polyurethane. This dual-density construction creates an under 1mm thick fender that strikes the perfect balance between stiffness, flexibility, and incredible durability.

The BOQS mount is separately manufactured from PA-6 GF, a glass fiber-filled Nylon composite that is often used in applications that require high-strength, minimal flex, and chemical resistance. It retains the fender with slots for the specially designed tabs on the BOQS fender. The BOQS mount therefore is stronger than traditional bolt-on mudguards, yet much smaller and compact, keeping it safe from potential damage or impacts while riding.

When a BOQS mudguard ends up caked with dirt after a ride, the fender can simply be popped off, cleaned, and reattached, tool-free. If either the mount or the fender ever needs replacement, only that component need be purchased, for less than the cost of a new mudguard.

Furthermore, because the mudguard consists of two components, it can be packaged and shipped more efficiently, taking up less volume than one-piece bolt-on mudguards. In fact, about six complete BOQS mudguards can be packaged into a typical 11x8x2” mailer box!

The separate components also offer a whole new realm of possibilities with color-customization, finishes, and opacities where most other bolt-on mudguards offer very little in terms of personalization, color, or even creativity…

Originally designed for Öhlins mountain bike forks including the RXF36, RXF38, and DH38, the BOQS system has expanded to include specific versions for many popular enduro and trail forks including the RockShox Zeb and Fox Float 36/38 models.
